Received via email 1-10-2025 from Diane Buhler:
Hello from the beach in Palm Beach, Diane Buhler from Friends of Palm Beach here to give you all a new year's update.
As of today, since 2013, we have removed 172 tons of debris from the 7.5 miles of shoreline we cover each week throughout the year.
The 2024 poundage we removed came in at 34,243 pounds removed (17 tons).
The global connections we have made via our trash collection here and our social media posts has expanded beyond West Africa to include the Islands of Guernsey in the English Channel. Similar products have been registered by our collections to match theirs.
Are these products riding the Atlantic Gyre like the West African octopus pots and FADs or are the same ships dumping the same consumer products here and there? We hope to figure that out one day. For now, we just collect and dispose of it all.
The scientific studies we have been involved in also includes a reach beyond our borders to Venezuela, Brazil, the Dominican Republic and throughout the Caribbean.
As I reported last year, we have been published with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute scientific papers and there are more to come.
We continue our daily routine to cover the 7.5 miles of shoreline from the Palm Beach inlet down to Sloan's Curve, only excluding Midtown and the Breakers beaches, to collect an average of 55 to 150 pounds a day.
We are in our 12th year of shoreline cleaning and hiring from The Lord's Place and VitaNova to help us do this.
We are optimistic and inspired by our results with trash and with helping people.
Meanwhile, we also work to research and improve actions toward this global epidemic of plastic pollution through education, awareness and scientific studies with other Florida organizations.
    Thank you for listening.
Wishing you a happy and healthy 2025 to all of you.
