Dear Mayor and Town Council,
Our streets are the face of our Town and are the largest component of our civic realm. Streetscapes have meaning and reflect our common values, are the civic armature for fellowship and a civil society. How they are curated expresses how we care for our community and each other.
South Lake Drive is an important street in our Town. It’s the first street at the central gateway to the Town, Royal Palm Way. It holds our views to the water, contains a landmarked park, our only marina and is the front door of many residences. It should not be treated like a service alley. A garbage dumpster, housed in a chained link-fenced plastic tent does not belong on the street. A garbage facility is a necessary but "back of the house" function.
A large complex project like the new marina, with many moving parts, tied to time-sensitive contractual agreements, is bound to need some adjustments after the dust settles. The decision to find a better solution for handling the garbage now will create more value in the long-term than the short-term cost of moving it. The erosion of the Town's identity by leaving it there is the more costly decision.
